PUDGY CHEEK CHIPMUNK Copyright 1997

PUDGY CHEEK CHIPMUNK

A LITTLE TINY CHIPMUNK,
SCURRIES DOWN THE TRAIL.
FLIES ACROSS THE CLEARING,
ALL YOU SEE IS A TAIL.
DOWN THROUGH THE HOLE,
THAT LEADS TO HIS HOME.
INSIDE AN OLD LOG.
UNDER A LARGE STONE.

IF YOU WAIT LONG ENOUGH,
HE'LL POKE HIS NOSE OUT,
TO TAKE A LOOK AROUND,
AND SEE WHOSE ABOUT.
ONCE HE THINKS IT'S SAFE,
TO HIS FORAGING HE RETURNS,
FOR HIS WOODLAND DINNER,
HIS RUMBLING TUMMY YEARNS.

THROUGH THE BRUSH,
AROUND THE TREES,
HE FINDS TASTY BERRIES,
HIDDEN IN THE LEAVES.
STUFFING HIS MOUTH,
UNTIL HIS CHEEKS HURT.
THIS SATISFIES HUNGER,
BUT CERTAINLY NOT THIRST.

WITH HIS TEENY TINY TONGUE,
HE LAPS AT A DROP OF DEW.
BUT HE IS ALWAYS WEARY,
HE IS NOBODY’S FOOL.
FOR HAWK, SNAKE AND CAT,
ARE ALWAYS LURKING AROUND,
THAT'S WHY HE STAYS CLOSE,
TO HIS HOME UNDER GROUND.

DARK, PASSING SHADOWS,
THE BAREST HINT OF SOUND,
AND SOON OUR FRIGHTENED CHIPMUNK,
IS QUICKLY, HOMEWARD BOUND.
TO WAIT UNTIL THE DANGER,
GIVES UP AND GOES AWAY,
IN HIS COMFY LITTLE HOME,
THE CHIPMUNK WILL SAFELY STAY.
